If you have a family member who is currently in prison, the best way to stay in touch is to use an inmate texting application. These apps are specifically created to meet prison regulations and allow family members as well as friends to send and receive messages, photos, eCards, video calls, and even money into their trust account at the prison. In addition to these messaging apps, there are numerous federal inmate apps that offer additional services like video visits and phone calls.
JPay, for example allows family and friends to transfer money directly into an inmate’s trust account as well as videos, photos, emails, and electronic cards. It also lets them make personalized postcards featuring personal photos. It's a safer and more secure alternative to postal mail.
Another popular texting app for inmates is GettingOut. It offers "simple reliable, reliable communication" between inmates and their loved ones. The app, which is available in select correctional facilities allows inmates to upload pictures and message their family and friends on their tablets. It costs inmates $0.25 for each message and loved ones pay for the data that is used to read their messages (but not for explicit images). You can also make use of the GettingOut app to share photos on Facebook or Foursquare and check in on Foursquare and then include a video in the federal inmate text app YouTube upload.
